What Are Your Goals?

Everyone has different goals! What are yours? How do you set them? Do you have both short term and long term goals? I personally am always working with goals. Weekly goals, monthly goals, yearly goals, fitness goals, diet goals, workout goals, ect….

Currently my daily goals are:

  • Drink at LEAST 1 gallon of water per day
  • Ensure I am getting enough protein in my diet
  • Remember to take my multi vitamin

Monthly Goals

  • Get my cardio in…..I will discuss my battle with cardio, but that’s an entire post of its own
  • Participate in my first fitness competition

Yearly Goals

  • Gain Muscle (this is a very slow process)
  • Establish healthy eating habits–making it a lifestyle

I am sure most of you, just like me struggle with goals, I don’t always get my 1 gallon in per day, I don’t always get in my 5-6 meals per day, I don’t always remember to take my vitamins, I truly struggle to get my cardio in, and I very much struggle to eat clean….I tend to sneak in way too many cheat meals.

1st NPC Competition

 

Although I have not divulged on the fact that competing has been a goal of mine for the last four last four years when I accidentally discovered Oxygen Magazine at Fred Meyer’s Magazine section, as soon as I saw the women, fit and strong I became interested with following and reading as much as possible. This last year it progressed from a dream to a goal. This was a crazy journey, a ton of hard work and dedication, a ton of being scared and not knowing, researching, and talking to as many people as possible.

Last December (2011) I was at a point where I said okay, enough it enough, I have got to change something with my body. I re-upped my subscription to Oxygen, and a few more (Muscle & Fitness Hers). I cleaned out the pantry, and went overhaul grocery shopping, luckily at the time Oxygen had a month-long meal plan that I followed at first. This got me in the groove. One issue I have always had, and I feel like this was a huge hindrance to my success over the last few years was relying on others to assist me in my workouts. With my headphones in tow I finally got enough confidence in the gym to navigate myself. I relied heavily on bodybuilding.com and YouTube.com to learn how to properly perform my strength training routines. Once I knew enough to do it on my own I knew that I could do this, I knew that I could set a goal to complete. I started my workouts last December, was on my own by January and set the goal to complete in my first competition that June. I bought my heels, and took a posing class….after the class I realized I was in way over my head. I did not feel ready after looking at some of the other girls, I also was not sure if it was something I would be able to do, step on stage. As a result, I dropped my date, decided to just concentrate and work on developing my body.

A few months later I set my sights on a show again, October 13th 2012, I printed a countdown calendar, and decided to do it no matter what. At about 13 weeks out something really great happened to me. I met a girl at the gym who happened to be training for her first show also, she was also planning on her first show being the same show as me, AND we were in the same height class. We connected instantly and I cannot tell you how much support she was. All of the details we worked out together, and learned together, and researched and shared information with each other, and we found a posing class to take together.  We both were very successful at our first show, we took the first and second place spots in our height class. I will be sharing information that we learned for anyone who also has the dream or goal of competing. It’s a tough journey, it is very intimidating, and there is a ton of information to be learned.

Take Photos To Check Your Progress!

 

I am forever grateful that I stripped down to a sports bra and boyshorts and had my boyfriend take “before” photos for me. As I started to see progress and started to snap my progress photos with my phone. I created a folder on my phone where I keep all my fitness progression photos. The great thing about my phone is that you can organize them by date, so I am able to open the photos and look at them from when I first started to now. I try and take photos at least every other weekend, in the morning. You will not regret this decision I promise! It’s so rewarding to look back through the photos and see where you came from, its very inspiring to keep going! Look at the before and after photo…such an amazing transformation! I can only imagine how proud these ladies are of themselves!

 

Bio – So What’s My Story?

I am 24 years old, currently working full time in accounting for technology consulting firm in downtown Seattle. Over this last year I have developed a passion for fitness and my health. I have always had an interest in both, however this last year I have taken it upon myself to become educated and also live the lifestyle. I will never go back, and only hope to improve and grow!

I grew in the small town of Lake Quinault. Most people have do not know where this is so I always say its near Ocean Shores and Aberdeen. When I say I grew up in a small town I seriously mean SMALL TOWN. Let me put it in perspective for you, my school was K-12 (yes that’s right, kindergarten through 12th grade) all in the same school, and combined (k-12) there were about 300 students. This means, my graduating class was about 14ish students. Where I grew up there were no grocery stores, no fast food restaurants, no movie theatres, no nothing. By the time I moved away (after completing my AA at the nearest community college 45 minutes away) there was only one gas station in the entire town. Where I grew up everyone knows everyone, you know their parents, where they live, sisters and brothers, what sports they play, ect…most people don’t understand how people grow up in like this, but it was normal to me. It was a beautiful place to grow up, but not much to do, not many people to meet, and not any opportunity. Even as a young child I had a desire for more, I dreamed of moving to New York city all the time when I was younger. I think there were benefits of growing up in a small town. Big schools have clique’s or groups, also what you wear and have seem more important. There were  some disadvantages, opportunities and options were very limited, such as sports and clubs.

I attended Grays Harbor Community college to obtain my Associate’s degree. After that I transferred to The University of Washington (Tacoma campus) and obtained my Bachelor’s degrees. I am happy with the route I took looking back, I enjoyed my time at UWT. This was also the first time being away from my hometown.

I remember the first time I discovered competing. On day about three years ago I was on my way to work, for the first time ever my little civic went out, my wonderful co-worker picked me up, I worked that day, and after work went to the Fred Meyer’s down the road to kill time and wait for my help to arrive. I ended up in the magazine section and somehow stumbled upon Oxygen Magazine. It was like I was instantly hooked! I could not understand how I did not know about this magazine before, the women inside the pages looked amazing, healthy, fit. Also near the back I found the pages of women who compete. When I got home I subscribed to Oxygen Magazine.

Competing has been something I have had a desire to do since I discovered it years ago. My problem was that I was not sure how to do it, how to get my body in shape. I give it a few (tiny) attempts (and I mean small.) I would follow my friend around the gym and he would tell me how to do certain workouts. If he didn’t go to the gym, I didn’t go to the gym. On top of that I had a complete lack of knowledge about how to eat properly, and what proper nutrition looked like. I still have SO much to learn, but I also feel like I have learned so much in just one year.

Last December for some reason something clicked for me, I was not happy with my body, I was at my heaviest weight, and was simply unhappy with my body. I knew something had to change. So I did. I re-upped my Oxygen Magazine subscription, along with a few new ones. Went grocery shopping, started preparing my food, and got my booty in the gym. I relied heavily on bodybuilding.com for workout information, and youtube.com to figure out how to do workouts. The gym can be very intimidating, I look back now and remember myself, in oversized t-shirts, my written workout in hand, trying to teach myself exercises and hoping to death I was doing them correctly. I felt so conscious of those around me. To date I feel like my biggest advise for anyone that feel conscious of those around them………headphones and music. It allowed me to block everything else out and concentrate on myself.

My progress was slow, but I was noticing changes, I am thankful I snapped photos every couple of weeks with my phone. Sometimes I felt like I was not making progress, but I was able to look at my photos from a few months ago and see improvements. A few months in, I decided I wanted to finally commit myself to compete. I was going to finally do it, my long time dream of competing. I set a date show date in June 2012,  about 5 months out I went to a posing coach, it was a group posing class. I felt like I was in over my head. Looking at the girls who knew how to pose, already had abs and looked stage ready, I decided to pack my freshly purchased heels in the back of the closet and concentrate of getting my body in shape. I ended up going to my June show, as an audience member, not a competitor which ignited my desire to compete. I felt like I would do it now. I set a new show date of October 2012, a few months out from the show I ended up meeting Heather in the gym. This was the single most important factor to my success and my actually getting on stage. Heather was training for her first show also, it just so happen to be the October show that I was hoping to participate in, and were about the same height so we figured out we would be in the same height class. We exchanged numbers and agreed to do some posing practice together. From there Heather and I figured out so much together, we took posing classes together, practiced, did cardio, talked about suits, figured out how to tan….we pretty much talked and researched everything together. She was my support system and I am beyond thankful to have met her. We had a great first season competing, and realized we were hooked. We have a few shows in mind for this next season, we are both just working on our bodies, always working to get them in better shape.

I feel as though the fit lifestyle was perfect for me, I feel like there is no going back for me. I love spending my time in the gym, eating healthy, resting, and doing it all over again. I think some feel as though they are sacrificing other parts of their life…not me! The last few years I have always felt like I was missing something, I was not doing enough in my life to be successful, I had not found my niche, after getting into this lifestyle that void disappeared. I always feel like I am working towards something. Everyday is an opportunity to get better and improve.

Fitness Clothes

Okay, I don’t know about you, but I know for me personally when I made the decision back in December 2011 that I somehow let myself go and I HAD to change it I was going to the gym in whatever I had and what I felt comfortable in. This mostly consisted of over sized t-shirt, and some old workout pants I had. A few weeks in i started to feel a bit grungy, so i ventured out and decided to buy some Nike pants…same style as below but they were black without the graphic. I actually didn’t wear them for a few weeks. I had to work up the courage….I was not use to wearing tight clothes to the gym, and my body was not really ready for them I should say. Eventually however, as time went, and my body was making progress I became more and more comfortable with seeing my body in in the mirror at the gym in clothes that showed my figure….now…most of the time I don’t go to the gym without a cute outfit, not for anyone else, but for myself. I now love working out at the gym, seeing myself in the mirror, being able to see my muscle as I work them. As most of us ladies are on a budget I rely heavily on discount stores….my personal favorite is Marshall’s. They always have a large section of fitness clothes. Sports bras, tops, and bottoms. I usually only find one or two items I want so I have slowly created a wardrobe of workout clothes. You find great brand name items, Nike, Reebok, Under Armour…but keep in mind you kind of get lucky when you find these great items, its almost like a treasure hunt, and if you get one great thing then your lucky. I also look at Ross, although their selection is extremely limited. A great place for shoes it Sports Authority or Nordstrom Rack. You can usually snag a great pair of Nike’s for under $50!

 One day at the gym I saw a girl with the CUTEST Nike pants, they were purple. I hate spending too much on my clothes….but for some reason I loved her pants, when I got home I looked online and found that her pants were being sold at Dick’s Sporting Goods…that was the only place selling them also so it was not like I could find them on sale somewhere…but had to have them….so I splurged…i think the price tag was $65…after tax it was about $70. Ouch right! I know I know….but I do love them.

What are your thoughts on workout clothes? Do you give your outfit an thought when you head out to the gym for your workout, or do you just thrown on what’s in your closet and get going. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you workout better or ANYTHING like that. At one time I was not even comfortable enough to wear clothes that showed off any part of my body. I don’t spend much on my clothes as I shop for them at Marshall’s, Ross, and Wal-Mart. Btw, you can get 3 sports bras at Wal-Mart for about $10. I suggest buying a couple of cheap outfits and seeing how you feel in them, make sure that when you buy you know you are going to be comfortable in them, otherwise you will get the gym and be uncomfortable the entire time! Blog For Accountability

As I am in my 4th week of fitness and nutrition I decided to share my journey with you all. I hope that others can benefit from my adventure, learn a few things, and also help me learn and achieve success. For the past three years my fitness has been very on and off, I workout regularly for a max three months and then fade out. My nutrition has never been top-notch, but attempts have been made. I feel the most determined than I ever have, my nutrition is probably 85% on track right now, I need to get this closer to 95%. My current obstacles are that I have relied on my significant other to lead our workouts, as a result I am lacking gym knowledge that one would have if they had been leading these workouts themselves. Learning the names of certain workouts, ensuring I have the correct form, these are all things I am currently working towards getting on track.
